This is Vinny. Be aware that common items can be toxic to pets!

Did you know that many common foods are toxic to dogs, cats and other pets? Neither did we. As it turns out, many things that are fine for people are poisonous to pets.

This is our dog Vinny. When he was just over two years old, he got into a bag of raisins. Overnight he threw up and the next day we called the vet. As it turns out, raisins and grapes cause acute renal failure in dogs. We had him admitted and for five days he received fluids via IV to try to flush his kidneys, but his lab results continued to get worse. Finally, a new IV could not be established and the little hope left that he would make it faded. We miss Vinny very much. He was a special and irreplaceable friend.

We never knew that grapes and raisins were toxic to dogs, but it turns out that as little as a serving can cause renal failure. While some dogs do recover, many do not and often it is because they do not receive prompt treatment. As we began telling people Vinny's story, almost no one knew that raisins and grapes were a problem. As a result, we're trying to use this site to spread the word.

Please visit our links page for more info. If you'd like to help spread the word (it's free!), check out our help page. Please feel free to sign our guestbook or to contact us.

Peace...
